Ultimate Guide to WIC: Essential Resources & Support for Parents

Ultimate Guide to WIC: Essential Resources & Support for Parents

What is WIC?

WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) is the USDA's Special Supplemental Program for Women, Infants, and Children. WIC provides free healthy foods, breastfeeding and pumping support, personalized nutrition and education, and referrals to other services families need.

Who is eligible for WIC?

A parent may be eligible for WIC benefits from the time they learn they are expecting, up until their child's 5th birthday. The WIC program was established in the 1970s to protect the health and safety of low-income families. While WIC is currently available in all 50 states, the guidelines may vary by state or county. You can check and see if your family is eligible HERE or by reaching out to your local WIC clinic or Health Department.

What Benefits Does WIC Provide?

Making healthy nutrition accessible is one of the main goals of the WIC program, but the benefits include so much more than just food. Families who are eligible for WIC may also receive:

Breastfeeding and Pumping Support

Health Education

Health and Immunization Screening

Mental Health Resources

WIC Breastfeeding Support

Nationally, less than 30% of infants are breastfed at 1 year of age. WIC aims to increase this number by offering breastfeeding support through Breastfeeding Peer Counselors and professionals. Breastfeeding parents in the WIC program may also be eligible for additional nutrition and education support. The WIC breastfeeding peer counselors may be able to help you with breastfeeding questions, getting your breastfeeding and pumping supplies, and help you find community support and resources.

We recognize that each family's  feeding goals are different and unique, and you may not choose to breastfeed exclusively. WIC also provides support and assistance for formula feeding. You may choose to feed a combination of both, which is also supported there.

If you are looking for support with food, breastfeeding, or even just navigating parenthood, WIC is a resource we would encourage you to look into.  If you are currently pregnant, breastfeeding and/or pumping, or a parent of a little one under the age of 5, WIC can help make sure your family gets the nutrition and support you need. If you aren't sure if you qualify or have more questions, we encourage you to reach out to your local WIC office and see what’s available in your area
