Summer is just around the corner, and for many families, that means more time spent by the pool or at the beach. While swimming is a fantastic way for children to have fun and stay active, it’s crucial to prioritize safety, especially for children under 5 years old. Here are some essential tips and preparations parents can make to ensure their little ones have a safe and enjoyable swimming experience this summer.

1. Constant Supervision

The number one rule for keeping children safe around water is constant supervision. Never leave your child unattended, even for a moment. Children can drown in just a few inches of water, and it can happen quickly and silently. Always be within arm’s reach of your young child when they are in or near water.

2. Enroll in Swim Lessons

While supervision is critical, teaching your child basic water skills can be life-saving. Enroll your child in age-appropriate swim lessons. Many organizations, like the American Red Cross and local YMCAs, offer programs specifically designed for toddlers and young children. These lessons can help your child become more comfortable in the water and teach them fundamental safety skills.

3. Learn CPR

In case of an emergency, knowing CPR can make a significant difference. Consider taking a CPR course that covers child and infant resuscitation. This knowledge can be invaluable while waiting for professional medical help to arrive.
